29 Jan 2019 Trouble on the Pattaya Campus building site.

Damage by an "interested party".

28 Jan 2019 Lights on the Pattaya Campus completed.

The whole compound is lit up for the first time.

27 Jan 2019 Digger trailer proves it can't handle the jungle road.

Bit of a disaster while picking up the digger from Rayong! One tire slipped onto a sharp rock which blew the tire. We had to return without it.

26 Jan 2019 Alexander and Angelina come for an inspection.

Alexander and Angelina come for an inspection of the transformed Pattaya Campus.

23 Jan 2019 TNT deliver 45xx Loco, and was unsuccessfully tested.

At 10:00 TNT finally delivered the 5 inch gauge 45xx steam locomotive weighing 80 Kg.

After sorting out the lubricated slip "Rolling Road" the loco was fired up for the first time. But we had no electric blower, which mounts on the chimney (coming on a future shipment), and had used diesel rather than kerosene, which is not readily available. As a result we didn't raise a good fire and made allot of smoke. The testing was aborted until we sorted an electric blower.

23 Jan 2019 Summer house ordered.

Beautifully made hardwood summer houses were being made a few kilometers down the Rayong highway. We ordered a particularly smart one for the Pattaya Campus.

23 Jan 2019 First Wylam Bridge progresses 45xx finally clears TNT as the lights go on

TNT sends a undecipherable request in Thai, so another visit to Leam Chabang Customs is made. They can't make head nor tail of it either! Eventually Chris is told to just send an email back with "I confirm" on it. Then at 2pm Customs inspection could take place. There is THB 51,720.77 Import Duty, VAT and clearance fee to pay on delivery the following morning. (hopefully much of that we will get back when the Foundation registration is complete).

Back to the Pattaya Campus where Lek has completed a rather novel laminate clamping jig for the bridge arch beams. The wall painting is finished and lights installed and tested. The toilet block roof is complete. Black Lab 3 month-old-puppy "Tasha" takes up her post as Campus deputy sheriff to old hand Genghis.

19 Jan 2019 First Wylam Bridge model construction started

To provide a pedestrian connection between the Thai house first floor and the first floor tree platform a model of the Wylam bridge in hardwood will be constructed. A further bridge will carry the railway over a duck pond, one on each campus. 2 trusses will be made each with a sandwich of down hangers within 2 laminate arch members. The span is 8.7 meters with an arch radius of 1.7 x 8.7 = 14.8 meters. The tricky bit of this is making the arch compression member which we decided to make by using a glued lamination technique. 12 arch beam pieces need to be made for the 3 bridges.

18 Jan 2019 TNT customs problems revealed

This is an update of the 17th Jan 2019 and 28th Dec 2018 News entries below - As a reminder; a 5" gauge 45xx steam loco was sent by Silvercrest Models from Daventry, UK to Pattaya, Thailand using TNT Global Express. IT was scheduled to be delivered on 25th Dec 2018. It never arrived and as of 18 Jan 2019 18:00 still hasn't.on 18th Jan, TNT Thailand escalated the problem to Supervisor Clearance, Ms. Tuangporn Thongnark. Chris Ross sent the following email as a consequence:

"Thank you for taking over this case and speaking to me on the phone yesterday. Below inline I have answered your questions which I hope will enable you to resolve the matter so we can receive delivery.

I hope this email will assist you. Feel free to call me any time on 087 136 2010.

To clarify, I will lay out what I understand the problems to be and for future reference, the way the system works.

Thai customs uses an advanced E-paperless computer system for clearance which TNT must comply with. When an aircraft lands it's computer manifest is automatically loaded into the E-paperless system. This manifest contains specific details of each individual consignment, such as ours. These details are what customs uses to approve, or not, the import and determine duties, etc. Once loaded into the E-paperless system, details cannot be changed without customs permission, so the manifest must be correct in the first place.

In our case many of the details were incorrect or inadequate. In particular:

  1. Because the consignee is an individual (as opposed to a company), his /her full name which appears on his.her ID document must be given, so for me it is a passport name MR CHRISTOPHER PETER ROSS British passport No. 511197813. (customs do not accept nicknames, so MR C ROSS is invalid.)
  2. The goods need to be described adequately " 5" Guage Scale Model" maybe understood by the sender but does not offer much to a layman or customs official. A fuller description could have been " 5 inch Gauge Scale working Model Steam Rail Locomotive for use as a toy or for educational purposes." In our specific case we have a web site that explains it's rather unusual (for Thailand) purpose): www.aaaeic.asia.
  3. The country of Origin was unclear which is Great Britain.
  4. The Brand Name was unclear and should have been "Silvercrest Models Kingscale Web site = www.silvercrestmodels.co.uk"
  5. The manufacture material was not stated which should be Steel, brass, Bronze
  6. Commodity in Thai - this is a difficult one as it requires a Thai writer, but it could have been obtained from the recipient in advance.

When I went to customs, They clarified and corrected their data and approved clearance. But then the TNT data is different to the custom's data and TNT cannot release the goods until the original manifest data is amended, which requires authorization from officials.

In conclusion, the problems handling this consignment were caused by inadequate recording by TNT UK of the consignment, a matter which, Khun Tuangporn informs me, she will be taking up with TNT UK."

17 Jan 2019 TNT still fails to deliver 5" gauge 45xx SteamLoco!

This is an update of the 28th Dec 2018 News entry below - As a reminder; a 5" gauge 45xx steam loco was sent by Silvercrest Models from Daventry, UK to Pattaya, Thailand using TNT Global Express. IT was scheduled to be delivered on 25th Dec 2018. It never arrived and as of 17 Jan 2019 18:00 still hasn't. in the intervening time numerous phone calls to TNT either went unanswered or failed to yield any intelligible explanation. Silvercrest in the UK equally were frustrated. A second visit to Customs in Leam Chabang confirmed that the goods had been cleared by Customs. on 15th Jan eventually the TNT agent dealing with the consignment phoned to ask us again to go to Customs and gave us a Custom e-Paperless system code. With this customs were able to authorize TNT to release the goods. The problem revealed itself: TNT had failed to load the consignment onto the Customs e-paperless system as they were required to. When on 24th we went to clear the goods Customs obliged but they couldn't release authorize a non-existent consignment. Clearance had been granted under MR CHRISTOPHER PETER ROSS British passport No 511197813 and TNT failed to connect that with the addressee "Mr C Ross". on 17th Jan, having got everything straightened out for them, we received a message that "we are working on it.", but as of 17th Jan we have had no delivery or any promise of we can expect it. The irony is that if TNT had properly recorded the consignment, they could have delivered it on time on 25th Dec 2018.
